The IND is the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service. For international workers who need a residence application, it is an important authority to understand. However, it is not the office that arranges your job, registers every resident’s address or issues every employment-related document. Knowing who handles what makes the process easier to follow. [S08]
This guide explains how to follow an IND procedure, handle correspondence and prepare for appointments, including when an employer or representative is helping with your application.
Know which organisation answers your question
Residence applications belong to the IND where the relevant route requires them. A TWV work-permit application belongs to UWV, while a GVVA is handled through the IND with employment-market advice from UWV. Your municipality deals with resident registration and address records. [S08] [S20] [S19]
These responsibilities remain separate when a task is delayed. A municipality cannot approve your residence application because an employer needs a BSN, and an IND appointment does not register your address.
Our guide to moving to the Netherlands helps you place each step in the wider plan. Keep separate references for immigration, housing and municipal appointments instead of treating them as one application.
Use the procedure that fits your actual circumstances
Begin with nationality, current status and the purpose of your stay. Not every international worker needs an IND residence application. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens generally follow a different framework from applicants who need permission for a particular residence purpose. [S06]
For a closer look at employment routes, read about working in the Netherlands as a non-EU citizen. Avoid choosing an application because someone with a different passport or employer used it successfully.
Ask the employer or representative to name the route and explain your responsibilities. Know what has been submitted, what remains outstanding and how important messages will reach you.
Read an IND letter as an action document
When correspondence arrives, identify the application reference, what the letter asks you to do and any deadline. Separate a request for more information from an appointment invitation or a decision. They represent different stages.
Keep the original message and your response. Clarify instructions with the IND or your authorised representative through an established channel. Verify unexpected requests before sending sensitive documents.
Record the date received, action required, person responsible and response sent. This simple record helps prevent important requests from being overlooked.
Follow your case through My IND where available
My IND is the IND’s personal online environment. It can show information about applications and personal details, and the available functions depend on the situation. Access normally uses your own DigiD. [S25]
Use it alongside official correspondence. If an employer applied for you, agree how it will share updates. A status screen does not answer every question about what you may do next.
Keep your login private. A helpful recruiter or interpreter should not need your DigiD password. When you cannot use the online environment, ask about the appropriate alternative rather than assuming there is no way to obtain information.
Prepare for the specific appointment you have been given
IND appointments can concern different tasks, including biometrics or collecting a document. Book the service named in your instructions. A general assumption that you need “an IND appointment” can lead to the wrong booking. [S26]
For biometrics, the IND instructs applicants to book after receiving the relevant letter. Follow the document list and attendance requirements provided for your appointment. Taking biometrics is part of preparing an immigration document; it is not a promise that the application will be approved. [S27]
Plan transport and time away from work with enough margin. Keep the appointment confirmation accessible and tell the responsible contact promptly if you cannot attend. Do not assume another person can complete an identity-related appointment in your place.
Keep your address and contact details useful
Immigration correspondence is only helpful if it reaches you. When accommodation changes, organise your Dutch address registration after moving and check any separate contact updates required for your application.
Even where official systems share information, confirm that representatives and appointment records have the correct contact details. Establish where letters will be sent and monitor the agreed channels.
When leaving temporary accommodation, arrange access to important post and record when you reported the address change.
Understand what an application does not establish
Submitting documents does not automatically mean you may start work. The permitted start depends on the route and the required evidence. An initial GVVA, for example, requires receipt of both the residence document and the additional employment document before employment begins. [S19]
Nor does a vacancy establish that an employer offers sponsorship. When considering unskilled jobs in the Netherlands, discuss your current rights and any immigration requirement before agreeing a start date. A role being accessible to beginners does not remove legal conditions.
For WorkInHolland vacancies, English communication is required. That helps you work safely and discuss practical arrangements, but it does not replace immigration eligibility or an official decision. [S01]
Connect the official process with a realistic job plan
Use our guide to finding work in the Netherlands to prepare the employment side: a clear application, suitable role and agreed conditions. Keep those discussions separate from promises about what the IND will decide.
Where appropriate, compare jobs with accommodation in the Netherlands and establish the housing costs and arrival arrangements. Ask what happens if dates change while an application is pending. A responsible plan leaves room for official procedures without presenting accommodation or recruitment support as guaranteed permission to live and work here.
Frequently asked questions about the IND
Does the IND issue my BSN?
Not through a residence application. A BSN is connected to registration in the Dutch personal-records system, with resident and non-resident routes. The IND handles immigration matters; your municipality or the relevant RNI service handles the registration process. [S04] [S05]
Is a biometrics appointment the same as approval?
No. Providing a photograph, fingerprints and signature is a procedural step. Read the actual decision and any further instructions to understand the outcome and what you may do next. [S27]
Can WorkInHolland decide or speed up my IND application?
WorkInHolland is a recruitment platform, not the immigration authority. Guidance may help you understand practical steps, but it cannot replace an official decision or justify a guaranteed processing time. Ask the responsible authority about the status of your case.
