Searching for highly skilled migrant jobs in the Netherlands brings together two different questions: which specialist jobs suit your experience, and which immigration route applies to you? Getting that distinction right helps you avoid applying with the wrong expectations.
A skilled technical role is not automatically a highly skilled migrant vacancy. In Dutch immigration rules, “highly skilled migrant” refers to a specific residence route with requirements involving the employer and salary. This guide explains the distinction and the questions to raise before making relocation plans.
Skilled work and the highly skilled migrant route are not the same
You may have strong practical skills in welding, maintenance, engineering or another profession. Those skills matter when an employer assesses you for work. They do not, by themselves, establish that the job meets the conditions of the highly skilled migrant residence route.
For that route, the IND generally requires an employment contract with an employer in the Netherlands that is a recognised sponsor, the applicable income level and a salary in line with the market rate. [18] The route is therefore more specific than the everyday meaning of “highly skilled”.
Browse skilled jobs in the Netherlands for suitable work, but ask separately about immigration requirements. A category label should never be treated as confirmation that the employer offers sponsorship or that your application will be approved.
First check whether you need this route
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can work in the Netherlands without a work permit. [16] If that applies to you, do not assume you need a highly skilled migrant permit simply because the job is professional or technical.
Other candidates need to check their own nationality, residence status and any work restrictions. There are different immigration routes, and the correct one depends on the circumstances. The European Blue Card is a separate route with its own requirements; it is not another name for the Dutch highly skilled migrant permit. [35]
Tell a prospective employer your actual situation early. Avoid writing only “visa needed” when you can provide a clearer description of your current status. Equally, do not state that you can work unrestrictedly unless you have confirmed that this is correct.
Know what a recognised sponsor means
Recognition is a formal IND status for an organisation. It involves responsibilities for the sponsor, and recognised organisations are listed in the IND’s public register. [46] Being an international company or advertising in English is not the same thing.
When discussing a vacancy, ask which legal entity would employ you and whether it supports the relevant application. Do not rely on a group brand name when the actual contract may be with a different entity. Keep the answer connected to the specific role and offer.
WorkInHolland’s job listings should not be read as a blanket sponsorship offer. Discuss your situation with the recruiter and obtain explicit confirmation of any proposed route. Our explanation of the recruitment process at WorkInHolland helps you distinguish a recruitment conversation from a confirmed employment arrangement.
Understand the 2026 salary criteria
For 2026, the published highly skilled migrant salary criteria are EUR 5,942 gross per month for people aged 30 and over, EUR 4,357 for those under 30 and EUR 3,122 where the reduced criterion applies. These amounts exclude holiday allowance. [19]
The reduced criterion is not available simply because a job is junior or a candidate is young. Specific eligibility conditions apply, including certain orientation-year-related situations. Check the IND’s current requirements for your own circumstances. [47]
Use the figures as eligibility information, not a prediction of the salary you will receive. Ask the employer to explain which criterion it expects to use and which pay components are relevant. Do not add an uncertain bonus to a basic salary and assume the resulting total meets the rules.
Make your specialist experience easy to assess
Prepare an English CV that names your relevant qualifications, tools, systems and responsibilities. For an engineering role, explain the type of projects you worked on and your part in them. For technology work, distinguish between software you used occasionally and systems you developed or managed independently.
Describe outcomes you can support. You do not need to reveal confidential client information to show how you approached a problem. A clear explanation of the situation, your decisions and the result is more useful than a long list of technical terms.
When location is part of your search, compare jobs in Amsterdam for English speakers with the practical requirements of the actual workplace. English may be the language of a team, but specialist knowledge and other requirements still determine whether the vacancy suits you.
Keep the application and the move in the right order
The employer handles the highly skilled migrant application through the relevant IND process. Documents and further steps depend on your circumstances. [18] Ask what you need to supply, how to supply it securely and what remains outstanding before work can begin.
Do not resign, book non-refundable travel or arrange a long tenancy solely because an interview went well. First establish the employment offer and the necessary immigration and starting conditions. Ask for a realistic timeline rather than using another candidate’s experience as a promise.

Frequently asked questions
Do all skilled jobs qualify for this residence route?
No. The highly skilled migrant route has specific employer and income requirements. [18] A skilled trade or a technical job title does not automatically satisfy them. Ask about the actual contract and immigration arrangements for the vacancy.
Does WorkInHolland automatically provide sponsorship?
No sponsorship should be assumed from a vacancy category or this guide. Discuss your work-authorisation situation with the recruiter and request explicit confirmation of what, if anything, can be arranged for the specific role before making commitments.
Are the salary criteria the same as take-home pay?
No. The published criteria are gross monthly amounts excluding holiday allowance. [19] They are used for the immigration route, not as a net-income promise. Your employment offer and personal deductions determine the calculation of your actual take-home pay.
